MIDLOTHIAN — The Midlothian ISD Board of Trustees, at a special called meeting Friday evening, unanimously approved Doug Wendel as the new head football coach and athletic coordinator at Midlothian High School.

Wendel will be leaving Ardmore High School in Oklahoma where he was hired in June 2011 as the athletic director and head football coach. He has a 32-16 overall record, going 12-2 last year with a trip to the Class 5A state semifinals.

He graduated from Oklahoma State in 1997 and spent time in Texas building his coaching career.

Before heading to Ardmore, Wendel was the athletic director and head coach in Eustace, Texas. He went 17-26 in his four years at Eustace and made three consecutive appearances at the state playoffs.

He also spent time coaching in Texas at Robinson Middle School in Plano, Plano Senior High School, R.L. Turner High School and Lake Highlands High School.

"It's truly an honor knowing that the School Board and Coach Keasler have faith in me to help advance the MHS football program and athletic program," Wendel said. "During my recent visit to Midlothian, I was so impressed with the quality education and schools, respectful students and overall positive vibe at Midlothian High School."

Wendel will begin his new position in Midlothian on Monday, March 16.
