FEMA extends deadline to register for storm damage assistance

ELLIS COUNTY — If you experienced weather related damages between May 4 and June 19 during the severe storms and flooding, you may qualify for financial assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended the deadline to register for assistance.

According to Ellis County Emergency Management, "FEMA has extended the registration deadline until Thursday, August 27, 2015 for the May flooding and storms."

Ellis County Emergency Management Coordinator Stephanie Parker said FEMA has paid out $82,378 to Ellis County residents so far.

"Texas homeowners, renters and business owners in designated counties who sustained damage to their homes, vehicles, personal property, businesses or inventory as a result of the May 4 through June 19 severe storms and floods may apply for disaster assistance," FEMA stated in a July 20 press release.

"Disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, emergency home repairs, uninsured and underinsured personal property losses, and medical, dental and funeral expenses caused by the disaster, along with other serious disaster-related expenses."

FEMA also stated, "Disaster assistance grants are not taxable income and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid, medical waiver programs, welfare assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, food stamps, Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance."

Parker wants to remind residents to not give up if they receive a denial letter from FEMA.

"Don't forget, a denial letter is not the end, always read it, and file an appeal. Sometimes it takes going through the entire process to get help," Parker said.
