Glenn Heights reports positive West Nile Virus mosquito sample

GLENN HEIGHTS — The Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a positive test for West Nile Virus from a mosquito sample taken from one of the City’s mosquito traps located near Lillian Avenue, which is located in the eastern portion of the City. In response to this positive mosquito sample, Dallas County will conduct ground spraying activities in the eastern portion of the City, east of South Hampton Road. The ground spraying activities will be conducted on Thursday, June 25, 2015, and Sunday, June 28, 2015. The ground spraying for each of these nights will begin at approximately 9:00 p.m. and end by 5:00 a.m., weather permitting.

West Nile is a disease that is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed upon the blood of an infected bird. The infected mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans and animals.

We encourage residents to inspect their property and be mindful of stagnant or standing water like flower pot basins, bird baths, wading pools, and pet dishes. Change out the water several times per week in these areas or eliminate standing water altogether to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs. Areas where water is circulating like swimming pools and outdoor fountains should be maintained on a regular basis.

The City of Glenn Heights relies on both residents and City crews to identify and eliminate any standing water which could serve as a breeding place for mosquitoes and larvae. We are utilizing progressive methods of protection which include public education, larvacide, and adulticide. The City will distribute free ‘Mosquito Dunks’ to residents to help combat mosquito larvae in standing water. Citizens are encouraged to report areas where mosquitoes and/or larvae could be harbored, either by calling the Police Department at 972-223-3478 or by utilizing the Report an Issue icon on the City’s website at www.glennheightstx.gov.
