Perry.Ellis County Precinct 3 Commissioner Paul Perry has introduced a resolution to make Ellis County a Second Amendment sanctuary county.The title of the resolution is, "RESOLUTION BY ELLIS COUNTY IN SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS".The Ellis County Commissioners' Court will discuss and possibly take action on this proposal during the November 5, 2019 Commissioners' Court meeting. The public meeting will be held on the second floor of the Ellis County Historic Courthouse at 2 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and sign up to speak.If passed, this would mean that at the county level, no resources would be authorized that would infringe on a person's right to keep and bear arms.Ellis County Sheriff Chuck Edge stated on a Facebook post by Perry, "Looks good to me!"Brad Norman is a candidate for Sheriff and posted, "That is a great resolution and I support it wholeheartedly!" Additionally, Norman followed up to a resident's question and answered, "I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment!"This resolution follows at least 11 other counties that have passed a similar resolution, which include Hood, Hudspeth, Jefferson, Kaufman, Loudon, Monroe, Parker, Persidio, Roane, Sevier and Smith.Perry's resolution states:"RESOLUTION BY ELLIS COUNTY IN SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO BEAR ARMSWHEREAS, it is the desire of the Ellis County Commissioners Court to declare its support of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Texas Constitution Art 1 Sec 23 protecting citizens inalienable rightsWHEREAS, the members of Ellis County Commissioners took an oath to support and defend the United States Constitution, the Constitution of the State of Texas and laws of the State of Texas (insofar as they are constitutional), and,NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Commissioners Court of the County of Ellis by the authority granted to the Commissioners by the laws of the State of Texas that this commissioners court will defend the citizens rights and liberties, which are guaranteed by the United States and Texas Constitutions.In addition:BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Commissioners Court affirms its support for the duly elected Sheriff of Ellis County, Texas in the exercise of his sound discretion. We also affirm our resolve to support decisions by our Sheriff to not enforce any unconstitutional firearms laws against any citizen.BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Commissioners Court will not authorize or appropriate government funds, resources, employees, agencies, contractors, buildings, detention centers or offices for the purpose of enforcing law that unconstitutionally infringes on the right of the people to keep and bear arms."
