UPDATED: Arrest made in crash that killed mother and two children

Maranda Abshire and her two children were killed by an alleged drunk driver Sunday morning on US 67 in Alvarado, Texas.

ALVARADO — Alvarado Police and Fire units in Johnson County responded to a fatality accident on US 67 between CR 810 and Baker Lane at 1:26 a.m. Sunday morning.

A 2010 Ford Mustang driven by Maranda Abshire, 22, of Burleson and 2007 Toyota pickup driven by Ricardo Martinez, 53, of Fort Worth sustained extensive front-end damage in what police in Alvarado say appears to be a head-on collision.

"Inside Abshire's vehicle were three children, all restrained with safety devices and recommended car seats," police said in a written statement.

Abshire and her two children, two-year-old Crus Dominguez and five-year-old Christopher Dominguez were pronounced dead at the scene. Abshire's 13-year-old sister was flown by Careflite to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Preliminary investigation reveals that the Toyota truck was on the wrong side of the highway and traveling in the wrong direction at the time of the crash," police said.

"The driver of the Toyota truck had to be extricated from his vehicle on scene by fire personnel. He was also flown by Careflite Air to local hospital."

Ricardo Martinez was charged with three counts of murder and one count of intoxication assault.

Police in Alvarado announced Monday that Martinez was arrested on three counts of murder and one count of intoxication assault related to the crash.

According to the Alvarado Police Department, Martinez's blood alcohol content was .240, three times over the legal limit. Martinez has two prior convictions for driving while intoxicated in Denton County and Tarrant County.

UPDATE 3/12/2015: Alvarado PD transferred Martinez to the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday.
