Ferris ISD Superintendent James Hartman issued the following statement on Tuesday.

"Many of you are aware of the news story reporting that an FISD maintenance worker was arrested on a warrant accusing him of touching a young girl inappropriately at a previous job in a neighboring community," Hartman wrote.

"Although I believe in allowing the legal system to run its due course and that all citizens are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law; I do feel it is important to clarify a few details on behalf of the school district."

Hartman explained that the date of the alleged crime predated Mares' employment with Ferris ISD.

"Please understand that the accusations predate Mr. Monreal's employment with the district. Mr. Monreal underwent all required background checks and fingerprinting (as do all prospective employees) prior to his employment with FISD. Mr. Monreal is no longer an employee of Ferris ISD and the school district is cooperating fully with law enforcement in this matter," Hartman said.

"Our thoughts are with the children and families impacted by this tragic situation."
