Ennis Crime Control and Prevention District to set 2015 budget Monday

ENNIS — Ennis residents are encouraged to attend the Ennis Crime Control and Prevention District meeting Monday where the board will discuss and vote on its 2015 budget.

The public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 27 at Ennis City Hall located at 115 W. Brown St.

"This meeting will determine the programs and budget that the CCPD will fund. The citizens voted for a new police facility, canine program, bicycle patrol program, traffic enforcement equipment and a Crime Prevention Officer. These programs will make us a better and safer city," the Ennis Police Officers Association said in a written statement.

"Please attend and show your support for these programs and ensure that the CCPD board/commissioners follow through with what the citizens voted for."

During last Monday's City Commission meeting, the commission held a public meeting to discuss the proposed 2015 budget.

The City Commission had previously voted 6-1 on July 21, 2014 to create a Crime Control and Prevention District. Voters approved a 0.25 percent sales tax increase during the November 2014 elections and the increase in sales taxes took effect April 1.

The City Commissioners voted Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 to disband the temporary board of directors filled by Rhonda Aycock, Carol Brazier, Kenneth Martin, Eddie Salazar, James Sanders, Tony Sinclair and Jerry Wester despite a proposal to make them permanent members of the board. Instead, Commissioner Ken Hackney Jr. moved to amend the original proposal and Commissioner Brian Holley seconded the motion. The commission voted 4-2 to appoint itself as the permanent board over the Ennis Crime Control and Prevention District.
