Maypearl police officer saves woman’s life

MAYPEARL — Maypearl Police Officer Shahid Mohamad was commended by Police Chief Kevin Coffey for saving a woman's life on March 1. Officer Mohamad responded to a report of a 60-year-old woman who had stopped breathing and was unresponsive at a residence on Norrell road.

When he arrived, Officer Mohamad found the woman lying on the kitchen floor of the residence. The woman was not breathing and had turned cyanotic. Officer Mohamad immediately began performing CPR on the woman. She began breathing on her own after several minutes of consistent CPR and regained consciousness as CareFlight arrived. The woman was transported to the hospital where she was treated and released about a week later.

For his exceptional and professional performance resulting in the saving of a human life, Officer Mohamad was awarded the department's Lifesaving Award by Chief Coffey.

"A lot of people believe that all the Department does is work traffic enforcement and write tickets. While that is part of our job, we also perform many other duties including responding to all medical calls. Every member of the Department is certified in CPR and the use of the AED's, and each patrol car contains a complete basic medical kit and an AED. The Department responds to an average of 15-20 medical calls each month and is often the first to arrive on scene," Chief Coffey said in a written statement.

"I'm very proud of the job that Officer Mohamad did that day and am happy to be able to recognize his exceptional performance."
