March 2: Happy Texas Independence Day

Monday, March 2 is Texas Independence Day — the day proud Texans celebrate the March 2, 1836 adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The declaration marked Texas' independence from Mexico. Nine years later, on Dec. 29, 1845, the U.S. Congress annexed the Republic of Texas into the Union.

Texas Flag Day and Sam Houston Day are special observances that share the March 2 legal holiday.

Sam Houston Day celebrates the birthday of Sam Houston, who led Texans in the Battle of San Jacinto to defeat Mexican troops on April 21, 1836.
