WISD School Board calls for $125 million bond election

At the meeting on February 17, 2015, the WISD School Board called for a $125 million bond election to be held on May 9, 2015 to address growth and facility improvements.

Since 2005, WISD has grown by 32.5%, or 1,968 students. In the last five years alone, WISD’s enrollment has grown by 7.8%, or 573 students which is enough students to fill an average-sized elementary school. Current projections by Templeton Demographics estimate growth of 883 students in the next five years.

  • The new Waxahachie High School will contain classroom space for 2,500 students and core space for 3,000 students grades 9-12 to allow for expansion when needed. The school will also house new Career and Technical Education facilities and a new Fine Arts Center. Waxahachie Ninth Grade Academy will be used as the third WISD junior high to address growth in junior high and maintain smaller class sizes.
  • Global High School will relocate to the current WHS campus which will provide Global with additional space to continue its present instructional model.
  • Waxahachie High School of Choice and Challenge Academy will relocate to a portion of the current WHS facility separate from Global High.
  • Wilemon campus will become another elementary school to address capacity issues at Shackelford and Wedgeworth. If space allows, the campus may contain a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math Magnet (STEAM).
  • Turner campus will become an additional elementary school to address student enrollment growth.
