Alleged gunman in critical condition after Ennis officer opens fire

ENNIS — The Ennis Police Department responded to a call of a man being threatened with a gun at approximately 6:45 p.m. Saturday evening.

In a press release issued by the Ennis PD, Lt. Mike Hopson said the alleged gunman was pursuing the caller in his vehicle.

Officers located the suspect in his vehicle and attempted to stop him. After failing to stop, the suspect lost control of his vehicle and collided with a street sign.

The alleged gunman refused to comply with officers' demands to exit the vehicle and drove at officers.

One officer fired through the windshield of the suspect's vehicle, striking the suspect.

Ennis PD has not released the name of the suspect, but he was transported to Baylor Hospital in Dallas in critical condition.

Officers recovered a loaded bolt action rifle from the suspect's vehicle.

The suspect is facing charges related to aggravated assault on a police officer, attempted capital murder and deadly conduct.

The Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation into the shooting. In accordance with department policy, the Ennis officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs Investigation.
